I have been intrigued lately with watching the public money. I won’t bore you with all the details of every game and the line, money movements, but I think we have been right on when we have released the other side of the plays the public has been backing, and backing HARD. Some of the action we have even stayed off of, thinking, there has to be a reason for this and the public must have something here. Two, most recent cases have been the USC/OREGON total and last nights total on TROY/FLA ATLANTIC game. We stayed off last night after just not having a great feel for which Troy team would show up. They had gotten blown out the last 2 games, granted vs much superior competition, but blown out nonetheless. But we were watching the total rise, it opened at 50, stuck there for a day, went to 51 and then boom. In a 2 hour span that number went from 51 to 53.5. That caught our eye and when that line closed at 54 if we could have gotten ahold of our members we would have stated to bet the house on the under. What happened? A 30-17 final and the under!!
The same thing occured in the USC/OREGON game except ALL the trends pointed to an under play for us at ATS LOCKS. We had the game pegged at o/u of 55 and when the total rose all the way to 57 we had the time to post our 20 unit winner and everyone went home happy. The public pounded that number all day Saturday figuring it would be a shootout. What our statfox.com trends/stats page showed was USC was 8-20 o/u as favorite, 9-21 o/u in all lined games and 1-13 o/u in lined home games the last 3 seasons.
What we are saying is when handicapping you have to be aware of where the public money is going and not be afraid to go against it. It does go against human nature to go away from what “the crowd” is doing but in gambling it comes to down to this. If you are winning, the “crowd” will follow you!

Sports gambling is a funny business. One day you sit at the top of the mountain, the king of your castle, lord of the manor, (homage to Seinfeld fans and Pro Football Talk) the next day you can be lower than a snails belly. It can be a humbling endeavor, you feel unbeatable after a 12-2 hot streak, friends are abundant and life is good. How it can turn so quick. One cold streak occurs and the people that were burning your phone up are no longer taking YOUR calls. The “friends” you made when you were hot are now complete strangers. This hasn’t happened yet this season, (we are only 10 days in) but all of us who have chosen this profession know exactly what I’m talking about.
One of the more interesting aspects of this career is explaining to the layman what it is exactly that I do. I personally, get more quizzical looks when I start my spiel about my chosen profession. People look at me with that look I gave my old teachers who tried to explain simple math to me when I was a kid. Then, the next line out of their mouth is always, “oh you gamble for a living”. At first I was taken aback by that comment and tried to come back with, no not exactly, but I have since given up. Not everyone will understand why I choose to scour every bit of info, statistic, trend or rumor to give us an edge on vegas and deliver winners to our clients. But when we pick winners, and we do, all is well again. The email inbox is full, voicemail is jammed and we all sleep well. At least until the next cold streak happens.

We released our first 10 unit winner of the pre-season with the Redskins -6 over the Colts. Looking at the depth of the rosters and a new skins coach we thought the redfaces would play well. Jason Campbell looked good and 6th round steal Colt Brennen lit it up with 2 td passes. Of course he was playing against guys who will be scrambling to find a real job as soon as the 15k signing bonus is gone.

We decided last night that the Steelers issue with no punter (sorry to Paul Ernster fans) made us want to check out depth charts for who may be available for them as camp cuts begin. Boy, the Steeler nation is in for a world of shock when they do the same. There are NONE, right, NONE, who even jumped out at us. Ex- Steeler Josh Miller kicked 3 times for the Titans last year and he is coming off injury and at 38, don’t see it happening. As a matter of fact, there is not one veteran I can find that is worth a damn to even bring in to for a tryout. I say, they go this route. Bring in the kid who kicked last year for the Toledo Rockets, Brett Kern. He has good size, 6′3 200 lbs, had a net avg last year of 46 and is sitting at home as far as we see. The team showed last year they are not afraid of rookie punters so why not bring this kid in for a look? They brought in a young, untested street free agent in Jeff Reed and that turned out to be a great move. I say, if you have to take a chance, take it with youth. Not with a worn out dud like Paul, hang on to the ball dummy, Ernster.
